Helinki tour in the 'Southwark News'

DULWICH SUPPORTERS LOSE IN FINLAND

Dulwich Hamlet supporters' trip to Scandinavia saw them lose a tough encounter in the sun, as an experienced squad ran out of legs.
The supporters' team annual summer tour saw them visit Helsinki, where they took on the fan's from the HJK side that currently top the league in that country.
After a downpour of rain on Friday night of monsoon proportions, the game between the two sides was played in bright sunshine which went part of the way to an ageing Hamlet side losing to their younger counterparts.
Hamlet Manager Michael O'Shaughnessy said "The sypporters' football match was as I think most of us expected played in the right spirit. great fun and all of our squad got a good run out. The rain expected during the match turned up on the Friday night, and as seems to becoming a bit of a hbit with us on summer tours, the sun came out and baked us. Not a problem when you are young and fairly fit, but a killer for most of us old lags. But we made a good match of it, and as per usual, the squad didn't give up, even though we were under the cosh for most of the second half."
Dulwich lost the game 2-1, after taking the lead, but as with most tours making new friends was as important as the match between the two sides.
O'Shaughnessy added: "Our hosts were absolutely fantastic. Making us feel really welcome and putting themselves out to make our trip to Helsinki as enjoyable and hassle free as possible. Brilliant people. Again this tour has shown how important football matches between supporters teams can be, as a way of making friendships between groups of people who under normal circumstances, might think they have little in common. We also get the opportunity to see areas and parts of the city that are off the usual tourist spots, and get a real feel for the city. The Finns have said they wish to visit London some time in the future and Dulwich Hamlet in particular, to help cement our friendship. We hope their plans go well for a return visit."
